Teri Hatcher was born on December 8, 1964 in Palo Alto, California, USA. Her father is Esther, a computer programmer who used to work for Lockheed Martin, and Owen Walker Hatcher, Jr., is a nuclear physicist and electrical engineer. He is of Welsh descent, and her mother is of Syrian German-Irish descent. She was born and raised in Sunnyvale, California. She took ballet lessons at the San Juan School of Dance in Los Altos. She attended Mango Prep (now Sunnyvale Middle School), Fremont High School in Sunnyvale, and De Anza College in Cupertino, studying mathematics and engineering.

In 2006, Teri Hatcher revealed to Vanity Fair that she was sexually assaulted at the age of 5 by Richard Hayes Stone, one of her uncles. Her parents did not know about the incident at the time. In 2002, Santa Clara County prosecutors helped arrest Stone after a recent sexual harassment that led his female victim to suicide at the age of 11. He pleaded guilty to four counts of child molestation and was sentenced to 14 years in prison. He died of bowel cancer in 2002. 2008, after serving 6 years of his sentence.
