Winona Ryder was born on 29 October 1971 in Winona County, Minnesota, United States. Named after her hometown of Winona, she moved with her parents to live in poor housing units in Betaloma, a California neighborhood when she was 10 years old. She was ill-treated by schoolmates who thought she was a gay boy and she was avenging everyone who harassed her until she was expelled from school and then moved her family to San Francisco, where she studied art and acting and was represented in small local theaters in San Francisco.
Her first involvement in cinema was in 1986 through the film Lucas with director David Seltzer, and she was only 13 years old.
She then participated in several major films that made her name and fame, most of them classical high-end dramas and could be regarded as an educated academic figure with deep thinking.
