Kanye West was born on June 8, 1977 in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. His father, Ray West, was a former member of the Black Panthers and was one of the first black photojournalists for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and later became a Christian counselor, who opened a good water store and coffee shop in Lexington Park, Maryland, in 2006. His mother, Dr. Donda Williams (West), is a professor. of English at Clark Atlanta University, and Chair of the English Department at Chicago State University before retiring to serve as Director of West. At the age of three, his parents separated and he moved with his mother to Chicago, Illinois, and he grew up in a middle-class family. At the age of 10, Kanye moved with his mother to Nanjing, China, where his mother was studying at Nanjing University as part of an exchange program.
West showed his love for the arts at an early age, and began writing poetry when he was 5 years old, rapping in the third grade, and beginning making musical compositions in the seventh grade, eventually selling them to other artists. At age 13, he wrote a rap song called “Green Eggs and Ham” and began convincing his mother to pay him $25 an hour for his time in the recording studio. He recorded tracks with a DJ known as the “Godfather of Chicago Hip-Hop,” and soon became his mentor after graduating from High school, West received a scholarship to attend the Chicago American Academy of Art in 1997, and began taking drawing classes, but soon after transferred to Chicago State University as an English major.
